Tiered Planter Lamp

IMG_8934.jpg

Lamp bases and shades come in all different shapes and sizes. Recently while at Ikea, I stumbled upon the Lagra Lamp--a simple lamp that had adjustable fixtures for attaching it to it's lamp base. It seemed like a simple enough modification to turn the lamp fixtures around and use the fixtures for storage. In this Instructable, I used 2 Lagra lamps, but you could easily add more to a single base.

You'll Need the Following:

  • Minimum of 2 Ikea Lagra Lamp Set Ups
  • Screw Driver
  • Wire Cutters
  • Wire Stripers
  • Heat Shrink or Electrical Tape
  • Potting Soil
  • Plants

Cut the Cord

Since we only want the lamp shade and head for our planter, we can remove the electrical cord.

Cut the cord within 2 inches from the base of the lamp using a pair of wire cutters. Strip the plastic coating to reveal the copper wire. Cover with appropriately sized heat shrink or electrical tape. If using heat shrink apply your heat gun to have it form fit to your cut wire.

Assemble the Stand

Assemble your stand following the Ikea Instructions with your Lagra Lamp.
  1. Line up your the screw hole on your longer curved black stand piece with the hole in the stand base.
  2. Using a screwdriver, screw in and tighten the larger of the two screws.
  3. Line up the holes for the two stand pieces.
  4. Using the screwdriver, screw in and tighten the smaller of the two screws.

Planters

Add your light fixtures to your stand and position them so that they are ready to receive plants.

Soil & Plants

Carefully fill your planters with the appropriate planting soil (if any). If you are using air plants, soil is not necessary and moss will work great as a space filler. Dig a well deep enough to receive your plants that need it. Place your plants in the light fixtures and cover with soil until covered.

Readjust the position of your plants if necessary now that they are fixed in place.

You're Done

You're done! Place your lamp planter in the appropriate place for your plants depending on their needs (sun/shade).

A note on plant care: since these fixtures do not have active drain holes, it is important not to over water your plants. Water them when they need it in small doses. You can also always simply mist your plants with a spray bottle.
