Toddler Safe Paint

We attempted this a few weeks ago and had a lot of fun just blobbing paint on the sidewalk. But we didn’t have a lot of corn starch so I had to order 3lbs of it and wait for it to get here. Now that we have a huge bucket of the stuff, we can do loads of DIY craft projects!

Today we made our corn starch paint. It’s safe for little ones, it dries like sidewalk chalk, and it washes off with water. The only downside that I’ve found is the food coloring in it might stain clothing, so make sure to use your paint clothes when doing this project!

Supplies

  • A pie pan or other container to hold multiple colors
  • Corn starch
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Water
  • Measuring cup
  • Food coloring
  • Paint brushes
  • Something to stir

Mix

Mix 2 cups of corn starch with 2 cups of water. It’s a 1:1 ratio, so you can do 1 cup corn starch to 1 cup water and so on

Stir

Stir until the corn starch is no longer clumpy and pour into your pan

Add Food Coloring

Drop food coloring into the different sections. Mix food colors to get new ones!

Use a popsicle stick or the back of a paint brush to stir in the food coloring

For this project we taped a design on the ground first and then filled in the sections with different colors

So, the paint still seeped under the tape. We are thinking next time we might outline the edges with chalk first, and then fill them in. You can also dip sidewalk chalk into the paint and then draw with it. The paint will dry out and get clumpy at the bottom, so paint quickly or keep stirring or add more water if needed.
