Tower of Babel

Tower of babel.jpg

For this project, I decided a piece of Ancient History. I chose to make the famous Tower of Babel talked about in Genesis 11 1:9. When I had saw that this contest had been posted, my mind immediately went to the Tower of Babel... I chose this project for these reasons.

  1. There is technically no "correct" way to create the tower as no one today knows what it looked like
  2. It was fun to come up with this challenge to try and create a spiral tower in Autodesk Revit while also adding Arches into a curved wall
  3. The story of the Tower of Babel and why God chose to scatter the human race across the world and confuse their tongues of language is very cool to me. The people having one language and one culture were very powerful together, God seeing this decided that their efforts of building a tower into the Heaven's could lead to a very poor ending thus scattering them across the world and confusing them all. God feared that the people would rebel against him due to our pride and egos however, he is just and merciful. Although we sinned against him he let us be free with the exception of our language and culture. This story should be a great lesson to every to trust in the Lord and to be humbled by him for we are not perfect and should seek the guidance of God and not be prideful in ourselves.

The making of this project was very fun for me, I enjoyed making this project as it was a new way to design something I've never tried to do before in any Autodesk Applicataion.

Supplies

  1. Autodesk Revit
  2. Inspiration through pictures on Google and from the ESV Bible

Research

The actual shape of the Tower of Babel has always been speculated as there was never any conformation on how it actually looked. Many people think it was a Ziggurat that kept climbing upwards however, I believe it to be a spiral shaped like a tower. Though we may never know what it actually appeared as this is my personal rendition of what it could've been.

To start this project, the first thing that you'll need to do is use model lines to create a spiral tapering inward.

  1. Once you have the spiral, you will need to use the "Model in-place" component feature and scroll to "Walls"
  2. Then use the "Swept Blend" tool to pick the interior interior model line to create a sketch on
  3. Edit profile #1 to create a rectangle sketch that isn't too high
  4. Edit profile #2 to make it about 6' higher than the previous profile then Finish the sketch.
  5. Continue the steps until you get to the piece of the interior spiral

Top of the Tower

When getting to the top of the tower, start it like the previous sloped ramp however when getting to the second profile, you're going to keep it at the same height as the top of the previous ramp.

  1. To make the middle first select Extrusion and not Swept blend
  2. Set a work plane to the flat part of the ramp
  3. Use the select lines tool to select the edge of the rectangle and interior semi-circle
  4. Draw an arch from the left point to the right point
  5. Finish the sketch then drag the extrusion to the ground
  6. Now the main part of the Tower of Babel is complete

Adding the Openings

To add the Arches, you will need to use the pre-made Archway component.

  1. After you select the component, edit the type
  2. Duplicate the type and edit the height of the arch
  3. Repeat #2 for each level of the tower
  4. Once you have all of the arches added onto the tower then you can continue to add more features such as more detailed arches or even smaller buildings.
