I decided to make a wooden stable toy, for my grand daughter's Christmas present.

Supplies

9mm Plywood

Lollipop sticks

Wooden spatulas

1/16" Basswood sheets

3/16" x 1/2" Basswood

6mm Dowel

8 x Small hinges

Piano hinge

Yacht Varnish

PVA glue

Make Outline Shape

I marked out and cut the pieces of plywood to build the basic shape.

I decided the size required to house the toy horses that I had bought

I scored the outside of the pieces with a Dremel to look like planks

The stable was built in two halves as I wanted it to open.

I added internal divisions and hay lofts

Make Doors and Ladders

The doors were made up in three layers

  1. Sheet of 1/16" Basswood
  2. Layer of wooden spatulas
  3. Lollipop stick frame and cross brace

After each layer was added they were held down under weights while they dried

They were fastened to the stable with the small hinges

The ladders were made up from 3/16" x 1/2" Basswood and 6mm Dowel

  1. Cut the 6mm dowel into 40mm lengths
  2. Cut two side braces the required length
  3. Tape two side braces together with masking tape
  4. Mark out down the centre line where the rungs will go
  5. Drill 6mm holes for the rungs
  6. Dab pva in each of the holes
  7. Knock the dowel into the holes on one of the side braces
  8. Tap the other side brace onto the top of the dowels

These were glued to the back wall to link the floor to the hay lofts

Finish Off

Two sheets of plywood were added as the roof

The stable was lightly sanded and vacumed

The piano hinge was screwed to the back of the stable, across the join

It was then given a coat of varnish

The stable was well received

I had bought some horses and riders secondhand off Ebay

I made some hay bails from scrap pine

My grand daughter loved it!
