Tree of Gondor T-Shirt

8-24-16 011.JPG

Hi guys!

This shirt is inspired by Aragorn and Faramir's shirts in The Lord of the Rings movies. The design is called the White Tree or the Tree of Gondor, after (you guessed it) a white tree that's symbolic in Aragorn and Faramir's country. It's also a pretty design, but LotR fans will get it. :) This project took me about 30 minutes, taking pictures.

Supply List

To make this craft, you'll need:

-a clean, dry, plain black t-shirt (I bought mine at Jo-Ann)

-white fabric paint

-cardboard for under the shirt

-a reference picture (I got mine from Pinterest)

-a scrap of paper or cardboard to test out and practice with your paint

-a piece of paper towel to wipe globs of paint from the paint's tip

-a damp paper towel for blotting out mistakes

(Not all supplies shown.)

Step 1

Slide the piece of cardboard underneath the shirt, so the paint doesn't soak through to the back.

Step 2

Check your paint for how long it takes to dry, so you can wash and dry it later. (And wear it with pride!) Then open the paint and test it on the cardboard or paper scrap. Practice swirls, lines and diamond shapes. After you've gotten the feel of it, you're ready to paint!

Step 3

Beneath the collar in the center of the shirt's front, paint an eight pointed star. To do this, paint a diamond shape, then make four smaller points between the diamond's points. Filled in with paint, it looks smooth.

Step 4

Freehand the branches, stars and trunk, using the reference picture. Thin the trunk after finishing all the branches. Make simple swirls for the roots. The shapes are pretty simple, just lines and swirls. (Like you've practiced on the scrap.) Don't worry if it doesn't look exactly like the reference picture, mine doesn't either! If you make a mistake, take a scrap of a damp paper towel and blot it out.

Afterword

You're done! Well, you still have to wait until it dries and is washed and dried, but the hard part is over! This could be the beginning of a Halloween ranger costume, or rangerette in my case. Or you could wear it with jeans for a casual, everyday look.

This is my first published Instructable, I'd be honored to hear from you or see your version of it. I'll answer questions, if any.

Thank you for reading all the way through!
