Turn an Old Tie Into a Headband
Instead of throwing your old ties (or your dad's ties) into the Goodwill bag, try re-purposing them into cute and comfortable headbands. To make them, you will need a tie you are willing to cut up, and you won't need a sewing machine (you'll be hand-sewing for this project, although you can always try it with a machine).
Materials
What you'll need:
- An old business tie
- Sewing needle
- Scissors
- Matching thread
- 4 inches of 1" wide white elastic
Sewing the Elastic
You're not going to need to cut or measure anything in the this step, so don't worry yet. To begin, pin the end of your elastic to the narrow end of the tie. Thread your needle and start hand sewing along the edges of the elastic, sewing the elastic securely to the tie.
Measuring and Cutting
Now you're going to mark on your elastic about three inches above where you sewed it to the tie. Then measure around your head how long the tie needs to be (if your confused, look at the picture). Cut the tie about an inch above where you marked it (that's for hemming). Fold over the extra inch so that your not sewing with the raw edges of the material.
Finishing Sewing
Pin the elastic to the bottom of the other side of the tie (shown in picture), and like with the other side, you're just going to sew small stitches around the edge of the elastic, sewing it securely to the tie.
Complete!
Tie your extra threads together to keep your sewing from coming apart. Then your colorful custom headband it complete! You can use the extra materials to make hair bows or hair ties. Enjoy!
