Tutorial: Build an Easy Swing
This is a tutorial how to make an simple swing. This can be done by anyone and you don't have to own any special tools. Have fun making this swing! I UPDATE!: currently made some adjustments to the swing you'll find everything you need to know in step 6 and on.
Gathering Materials
Before you can do anything you obviously will need some materials. Here's a picture with all materials you need this excludes the tools used to make the swing.
You'll need the following items:
- One piece of wood ( size: about 12 x 60cm)
- Two carabiners
- Two metal rings
- Two rope height adjusters
- 15 - 20 meters of rope
You'll also need some tools:
- A saw
- A drill
- A lighter
- A knife or scissors
- Sandpaper
- A meter
- A pencil
That's all you need once you gathered all of this we can start the building process.
The Plank
This is a very easy part.
You start with you piece of wood. Make sure it's just about 12 x 60 cm. You'll first have to mesure 2.5 cm from all sides of the plank. If you did this correctly you should have 4 marks. Drill a hole on that mark that's 8.5 mm big. I took 8.5 mm because me rope is 8 mm thick. You should adjust the size of the hole to your rope. Make sure everything is clean with some sandpaper.
You just completed the first step!
The First Piece of Rope
Take a piece of rope that's just about 60 cm long. Make sure you use your lighter on the ends of the rope so that the rope stays intact. Put both ends trough a hole. Do the same thing on the otherside of your piece of wood. On the bottom side where your rope come trough you should tie the rope. You can do this by making a simple knot but make sure they are very thight. You can see this on the picture.
Next you need to take a metal ring and tie it to the rope like on the picture.
More Ropes!
Cut two pieces of rope that are 6 to 7 meters long. Melt the end of the rope like the previous step. Tie one end of the rope to the metal ring and the other end to you carabiner. Hook your carabiner your rope height adjuster like in the picture. So when you throw your rope over the branch you have to lock your rope into the height adjuster. Like shown above.
The End Is Near!
Congratulations you just succesfully make yourself a swing. Although i can give you one more tip. Tie two short pieces of rope to the metal ring. This helps alot if you want to take your swing with you and not have all the ropes jingling around. You might not visualise this but don't worry look on the picture this is how your travel ready swing looks like.
Thanks for following my instructable for an easy and quick build swing.
I hope you enjoyed making it and have fun swinging.!
Swing 2.0
Hey here is my update of my swing. I made some adjustments and let you know all about it right here.
I changed to kind of wood I used. Currently I went for multiplex because the old wood was too bendy when you were swinging. I also made some sleight changes to the my height adjustment system. You can now adjust the height under the swing itself.
So let's get started building.
First of all you will need to cut a piece of multiplex. I went for 60 x 16 cm that's sleightly wider than my previous prototype but it's more comfortable to swing.
Next you'll need 4 pieces of wood. You need 2 pieces of 44cm and 2 of 50cm. You can check pictures above how it have to look. Glue the shortest pieces to the multiplex both at about 4.5cm of the edge. When that's done glue the londer on top of them. I also used 4 screws to keep everything tightly together.
Easy Carry to the Park + Video
As you can see in the pictures it's a compact and easy to carry swing. Have fun walking it to the park or just your backyard. Also enjoy the little video of me hanging my swing and swinging it.
