Up-cycle Beautiful Plaited T-shirt Necklace

Never throw away another old t-shirt again! Why? Because you can make this amazing Necklace! :) It so easy to make and quick to put together, why not make one for every outfit? Use any color/combination that comes to mind!

Things You Will Need

  1. A t-shirt, preferably one that you don't want to wear anymore! (The bigger the shirt, the longer the Necklace)
  2. Sewing scissors,
  3. Ruler with inches,
  4. Needle and Thread, to match the color of the t-shirt,
  5. Clothes Chalk,
  6. Safety pin,
  7. Paper weight.

Marking the Strips

Fold your t-shirt in half and mark 1 1/2 inch wide strips all the way up the t-shirt. You are wanting to get at lest nine strips.

Cutting the Strips

Cut the t-shirt along your marked lines. It was easier for me to keep the t-shirt folded, but if you find it easier to unfold the t-shirt, that's fine too!

(Save the other part if the t-shirt for later on.)

Now cut each strip in half, on only one end, you want them to be long as possible...

Stretching, and Sewing

Once you have nine long strips cut out, stretch each one, so the fabric curls onto it's self.

Sew each and every end on all the strips, so the curl stays.

Pinning

Take your safety pin and pin 3 strips together from one end.

Start Looking for Something Heavy...

When you have found something heavy, like a paperweight, or a pen container (add a few more pens if you have too!) Put the weight on top of your 3 pinned strips.

(Or find someone kind enough to hold the end for you!)

Plaiting...

Now plait your 3 strips...

  1. Left one over the middle one,
  2. Right one over the left one (that's now in the middle),
  3. Middle one (that's now on the left) over the right one (that's now in the middle)
  4. Continue all the way to the end of the strips.

I hope I didn't confuse you just then! :/

Déjà Vu

Repeat steps 5 - 7 with the remaining 6 strips.

You should have 3 plaits before you move onto the next step!

Knoting

Tie each plait with its own end, to make a circle (You will have 3 circle's)

Pull the knot tight, and cut off any lose ends.

Joining Together

Remember that other part of the t-shirt I said to save?? Well, pull it back out and cut a square (anywhere from the t-shirt) just big enough to cover the 3 knots. It is better to cut the square to big and trim it down as needed.

Sew the square closed over the 3 knots. Try to make it tight enough over the knots so it wont slide around.

Voilà!

And there you have it! A beautiful t-shirt Necklace!

It's as easy as that :) I hope you will enjoy making and wearing it, as much as I do!

Au revoir!
