Use Fusion 360 to Make a YO-YO

Not only you'll be able to make your own customizable yo-yo with this Instructable, but you'll also learn some basic stuff about Fusion 360. No basic knowledge of Fusion 360 needed, you'll learn it here.

Create Sphere

  1. Start a New Design.
  2. In the Create drop-down, select Sphere.
  3. Create Sphere of 80mm on the XZ plane.
  4. Click OK.

Create Offset Planes

  1. In the browser, make sure the light bulb next to the Origin is on so you can see the planes.
  2. In the Construct drop-down, click Offset Plane.
  3. Select the XZ plane and type in a value of 41mm.
  4. Hit Enter or click OK.
  5. In the Construct drop-down, click Offset Plane once again.
  6. Select the XZ plane again but this time type in a value of -41mm.
  7. Hit Enter or click OK.

Sketch Rectangles

On both newly created planes, sketch rectangles that are bigger than the sphere. The exact size is not important, just make the rectangles big enough.

  1. In the Sketch drop-down select Rectangle.
  2. Select one of the newly created planes and create a rectangle.
  3. Click Stop Sketch.
  4. In the Sketch drop-down select Rectangle.
  5. Select the second newly created plane and create a rectangle.
  6. Click Stop Sketch.

Extrude the Rectangles

Use the Extrude command to cut the sphere.

  1. In the Create drop-down, select Extrude. Or hit E on your keyboard.
  2. Extrude the bottom rectangle to 41mm and make sure the Operation is set to Cut.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Hit E on your keyboard.
  5. Extrude the top rectangle to -15mm and make sure the Operation is set to Cut.
  6. Click OK.

Fillet the Edges

  1. In the Modify drop-down, click Fillet. Or hit F on your keyboard.
  2. Select both edges and type in a value of 1mm.
  3. Hit Enter.

Decorate Your Yo-yo

Sketch your own design or insert a reference image.

Insert a Reference Image

  1. Click Top on the View Cube.
  2. Click Insert.
  3. Select the top face.
  4. Insert the image.
  5. Adjust and position the image.
  6. Click OK.

Create Sketch

In this case, use the Line command to copy all the lines of the reference image onto the top face.

  1. In the Sketch drop-down, select Line. Or hit L on your keyboard.
  2. Select the top face.
  3. With the line command active, copy all the lines of the reference image.
  4. When done, click Stop Sketch.

Extrude the First Set of Profiles

  1. Turn off the light bulb next to the Canvases in the Browser.
  2. In the Create drop-down, click Extrude. Or hit E on your keyboard.
  3. Select the four profiles shown in the image and extrude them to 1mm.
  4. Make sure the Operation is set to Join.
  5. Click OK.

Extrude the Second Set of Profiles

  1. In the Create drop-down, click Extrude. Or hit E on your keyboard.
  2. Select the three profiles shown in the image and extrude them to 2mm.
  3. Make sure the Operation is set to Join.
  4. Click OK.

Extrude the Last Profile

  1. In the Create drop-down, click Extrude. Or hit E on your keyboard.
  2. Select the profile shown in the image and extrude it to 3mm.
  3. Make sure the Operation is set to Join.
  4. Click OK.

Create Another Sketch

  1. In the Sketch drop-down, click Text.
  2. Select the top Face.
  3. Type in "360".
  4. Adjust and position the text according to your preferences.
  5. Hit OK.
  6. Click Stop Sketch.

Extrude the Text

  1. In the Create drop-down, click Extrude. Or hit E on your keyboard.
  2. Select the text and extrude it to 1mm.
  3. Make sure the Operation is set to Join.
  4. Click OK.

Sketch a Circle

Let's make a hole for the axle which will connect the yo-yo halves.

  1. Click Bottom on the View Cube.
  2. In the Sketch drop-down select circle.
  3. Select the bottom face and sketch a circle with the diameter of 15mm.
  4. Click Stop Sketch.

Extrude the Circle

  1. Hit E on your keyboard to start the Extrude command.
  2. Select the circle profile we created in the last step.
  3. Type in a value of -10mm.
  4. Make sure the Operation is set to Cut.
  5. Click OK.

Sketch a Circle for the Axle

  1. In the Sketch drop-down, select circle.
  2. Sketch a circle with the diameter of 15mm away from the yo-yo half.
  3. Click Stop Sketch.

Extrude the Circle

  1. Hit E on your keyoard to start the Extrude command.
  2. Select the circle.
  3. Extrude the circle to 25mm.
  4. Make sure the Operation is set to New Body.
  5. Click OK.

Create Chamfer

  1. In the Modify drop-down, select Chamfer.
  2. Select both edges and type in a value of 2mm.
  3. Click OK.

Offset Plane

  1. In the Construction drop-down, click Offset Plane.
  2. Select the XZ plane.
  3. Because the axle is 25mm tall, make the plane exact half, which is 12,5mm.
  4. Click OK.

Sketch a Point in the Center of the Axle

  1. In the Sketch drop-down, select Point.
  2. Select the newly created plane.
  3. Sketch the point in the center of the axle.
  4. Click OK.

Create Another Plane

  1. In the Construction drop-down, select Plane Tangent to Face at Point.
  2. Select the newly created point in the middle of the axle.
  3. Select the face of the axle.
  4. Click OK.

New plane is created.

Sketch a Circle on the Newly Created Plane

  1. In the Sketch drop-down, select Circle.
  2. Select the newly created plane that is tangent to the axle's face.
  3. Sketch a circle with the diameter of 3mm using the point that is in the middle of the axle.
  4. Click Stop Sketch.

Cut Out the Hole for the String

  1. Hit E on your keyboard to start the Extrude command.
  2. Select the circle profile on the face of the axle.
  3. Extrude the profile through the axle.
  4. Make sure the Operation is set to Cut.
  5. Click OK.

Create the Second Half of the Yo-Yo

  1. Right-click somewhere in the canvas to bring up the Right-click menu.
  2. From the Right-click menu, select Move/Copy.
  3. Make sure the Move Object is set to Bodies.
  4. Select the yo-yo's half.
  5. New options appear in the dialog box.
  6. Check the Create Copy check box.
  7. Click and drag the arrow to place the copy (the other half of the yo-yo) next to the first one.
  8. Click OK.

Time to Print

The yo-yo design in Fusion 360 is done and ready to be 3D printed.

  1. Right-click on name of the design in the Browser.
  2. Click Save As STL.

Attach the String and Assemble Your YO-YO.

You might need to finish the axle with a sandpaper. But it is better than making the axle too small.
