Vinyl Post Hanging Planter Boxes

These planter boxes can be used for flowers or herbs and anything in-between. The planters can dress up an ugly wall or hang from a patio. These are also space saving planters if you do not have the space to enjoy a garden. These planter boxes are 4 feet long.

Gather all supplies need for project supplies are listed below.

Supplies:

• Vinyl Post – 5”x5”x8’ = QTY 1
• Vinyl Post Caps = QTY 4
• Vinyl Fence Screws or White Screws 3/4” long = QTY 8
• Cable Ferrules 3/32” = QTY 4
• Cable Stop 3/32” = QTY 2
• Cable Thimble 3/32” (1/8” will be fine if you can not find a 3/32” one) = QTY 2
• 2 1/2” Screw Hook = QTY 2
• 1 1/4” Washers = QTY 4
• 1 3/4" Washers = QTY 4
• 1/2” Pipe
• 12’ Long 3/32” Thick Cable
• Weed Barrier
• Potting Soil
• Plants

Take the Vinyl post and cut it in half to make two 4ft long planters.

Cut out the area that will be used to plant plants which is 42” long and 3” wide. Make sure to round the ends to provide more strength and to help keep the shape.

Drill 1/8” holes for the cable that will be used to hang the planters. The holes should be approximately 2” from each end of the box and 2 1/2” from the sides (Center of post). Flip the post over and drill the holes on the opposite side as well.

Drill nine 1/8” holes down the center of the planters on the bottom side to provide drainage to prevent over watering. Space holes 5” apart.

Cut four 1/2” pipe in 4 5/8” lengths. In one side of each pipe cut a 1/8” wide slot 3/4” long. This pipe will be used for strength to keep the planter from bending under pressure.

Place caps on each end of the posts and attach with one screw on the top and one on the bottom of each cap.

Place the cut 1/2" pipe in the post over where the cable will be ran through. Make sure the cut slot of the pipe is facing up to the top of the planter.

Cut the 12’ cable in half to make two equal sections of 6’ lengths. Then take one planter box and insert the cable from the bottom. While trying to insert the cable through the top hole, if it becomes to hard to get it through then take the 1/2” pipe and angle it so you see the cable come through and grab the cable then fish it through the top hole. Once the cable is through both holes then put the 1/2" pipe back in the position that it needs to be. The slot in the pipe will give you enough area to allow you to pull the slack of the cable through at the same time.

Before placing the next planter on, you will need to finish off the bottom of the cable that will keep the box from falling off. First slide on the 1 3/4” washer then the 1 1/4” washer. The 1 3/4" washer is used to create a larger surface area to allow the weight of the box to be distributed. The 1 1/4" washer is used to make sure that the cable ferrule does not go through the larger washer as the larger washer has a larger center hole. Next add on the cable ferrule, then loop the cable back through the ferrule through the second hole, once it is in do not run it all the way out but until the edge then crimp the ferrule to hold the cable in place. Once you are done with one side follow the same instructions on the other side of the box.

Measure from the top of the bottom planter box to where you want the bottom of the second box and mark it. I used a 24” space between boxes as the herbs I will use can reach 18” in height. Then slide on a cable stop followed by the 1 1/4" washer then the 1 3/4" washer (Place these on both cables). Find the line that you marked to where the bottom of the next planter will be and crimp the cable stop on that spot. Follow this instruction for the other cable as well. After both sides are done then slide the cable through the second box just like in Step 9 on both sides.

On the end of the cable that will be the top, slide on a cable ferrule then wrap the cable around the cable thimble back into the other side of the ferrule and crimp the ferrule. Follow the same instructions on the other cable. Now you are done with the planter assembly.

Find out where you want to hang the planter boxes and screw in the hooks that will hold the boxes.

Hang planters on hooks.

Cut weed barrier to line the bottom of each planter. This will prevent dirt to fall out of the holes

Fill the planters with dirt, such as a potting mix.

Plant the plants or herbs that you want to use and now you are finished to enjoy the new planter boxes.
