Wall Art LED Lamp

1p.jpg

It’s a simple wall art until you turn it on.

For this you can draw any lamp design of your choice make it simple as it will look real when you turn it on.

lets make it.

Material Required

list.jpg

1. Sand paper

2. LED’s from LED strip or from Electronic stores ( color of your choice)

3. LED driver 3W

4. Copper wire (from toy motor, Tweeter speaker or from local electronic stores)

5. Soldering wire

6. Soldering Iron

7. Paint brush

8. pencil

9. Wire cutter

10. Nose plier

11. Acrylic colors

12. Instant Adhesive glue

13 Resistor from LED Strip.

Sketch Wall Art Lamp

1.jpg

Sketch a lamp design of your choice. See that the wire lines shown are not curved, as it will be little difficult to trace a copper wire and glue it to the wall. You can see two outer lamps are straight so it was much easy to trace and glue copper wire on it.

Removing LED and Resistor From the Strips

You can purchase LED’s and resistor from electronic stores or can be removed from LED strip.

The best way to remove LED's and resistor is by using desoldering pump or desoldering wick. As it was not available with me during project so I used plier.

With the help of Nose plier and soldering iron LED's and resistor from the strip were removed. You can use tweezers also to remove LED's as it does not put much pressure on LED while removing. Where as with plier it may get damaged if you put too much pressure.

Similarly remove resistor also from the strip. The value of the resistor 201= 200Ω on some strips it may be151=150Ω. This resistor act as a current limiting resistor.

LED Polarity

To find out LED polarity is simple, just check for the (+ ) & (- ) marking on the strip before removing and mark a dot with marker on (+) side or (-) side of LED. Some LED’s there is cut on one corner that indicates (-).

Placing the LED on the Lamp

4.jpg

Stick the LED on the wall lamp art with adhesive glue. It should be placed facing down so that light will be reflected down. you can stick LED's as per your lamp design. Once LED glued to wall don't try to remove it otherwise you will remove paint from the wall (same goes to copper wire also). make sure to mark the area first where you will place the LED.

Check the LED polarity before sticking it. Second picture shows how LED's are connected with (+) of LED on right hand side and (-) on left hand.I have shown LED's in the form of small black boxes as they were not visible in one frame.

Wiring the Wall Art

Remove copper wire from a tweeter speaker, small toy motor or can be purchased from local electronic store. See that wire gauge is of appropriate thickness so it is not easily visible on the wall art after applying paint. You can find very thin copper wire in wall clock machine.

Usually copper wires have a enamel coating, it is a very thin layer of insulation that can be removed by using sandpaper. Make sure to remove the insulation of the wire tip before soldering it to LED's and LED driver, or the circuit won’t be completed.

Place the wire on the wall art and glue it with a adhesive see fig.Use the glue drop by drop to stick the wire along the wall art.

First do series connection, start from (-) of 1st LED to (+) of 2nd LED, leave a little extra wire for soldering to LED see fig. Do same till (+) of 5th LED which is shown with yellow line. Black line shows (-) of 5th LED and it goes to resistor and from resistor to (-) of LED driver. Red line shows (+) of 1st LED and it goes to (+) of LED driver.

Make sure to leave sufficient wire for LED driver so that it can be concealed in a switch box where it will get power from the main supply. If wire is visible you can hide this extra wire from wall art lamp to switch box by applying same paint as of wall. LED driver will easily fit inside a switch box.

Soldering the LED’s, Resistor and LED Driver

After wiring the lamp art, solder the LED’s to the extra wire left during wiring. Solder the resistor and LED driver after soldering all the LED’s. Solder (+) of 1st LED to (+) of LED driver and (-) of 5th LED to resistor and from resistor to (-) of LED driver.

Check the (+) and (-) of LED driver while soldering it to lamp art connection. Underneath of LED driver there is marking V+ and V- and other two wires goes to AC main supply. Led driver which I have used in this project don’t have any protection or packing so if using similar type then insulate it before placing it inside switch box.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE CONNECTING LED DRIVER TO MAIN SUPPLY OR TAKE HELP OF AN ELECTRICIAN.

Turn on the Main Switch

12.jpg

Turn on the main switch to which LED driver is connected to check if connections are working. If not recheck the soldering joints.

Note : If using more than 5 LED’s in project you will be requiring more than 12volt from the LED driver otherwise brightness will be less from LED’s or it won’t work as supply voltage will be less than forward voltage of all LED’s. Different color LED’s have different forward voltages. In this project I have used 2 white, 2 green and 1 blue LED.

Resistor value = Supply voltage – LED forward voltage / LED current
