Watch Maker Drill Bit Chuck

I recently picked up a watch maker drill bit set. The set includes bits from .30mm to 1mm. I intended on using the set to make my own 3d Printer extruder nozzles. I neglected to think about the chuck I would need to hold the bits. My dremel and drills were all much too large to handle the bits. At first I used a pencil eraser. It worked for the 1mm bit and hand drilling, but without gluing the bit into the pencil eraser, it eventually worked its way out.

You will need

  • A watch makers drill bit set
  • xacto or similar hobby knife

Disassemble the Hobby knife and remove the blade.

It is very important that you line up the bit with the center of the hobby knife chuck. Pictured is the 1mm bit. It took a little work to get the 1mm bit to seat correctly.

Pictured is the smallest bit that came with my set .30mm! Needless to say I am glad I had a magnet and tweezers handy as my big fingers had trouble keeping hold of the bit.

Use the Drill by Hand or Mount It in Your Drill Press

I used my drill press on a low speed to drill out the holes in the LED device pictured above. For the Leather glove I manually drilled the holes. I would not suggest using the drill press for bits under .5 mm as it would be very easy for them to bend or break.
