Watercolour Splatter Clone Trooper Card
This is a simple and easy tutorial on how to make a good-looking watercolour splatter card.
Supplies
Recommended supplies
- Masking tape
- craft knife or alternatively a pair of scissors
- Watercolour or Multimedia paper
- watercolour paint
- paintbrush
- pencil
- pen
Choose Your Reference Image
First off, you need to choose your reference image. You want your reference image to have clear lines and to be bright, ideally black and white, this will make it easier to trace or copy. I chose this image of a phase 2 clone trooper
Copy Outline on to Paper
Next, you want to copy or trace the outline of your reference image on to your watercolour or multimedia paper in pencil
Only trace the most important lines that define the main shape of the image, leave out fine details until afterwards
Mask Off Areas You Want to Remain Blank
Next, you want to use masking tape to mask off all the areas that you do not want to paint, that you want blank.
I did this by cutting the masking tape with a craft knife and a cutting/craft mat, but scissors also work fine.
- you draw/copy/trace the shape on to the masking tape
- you cut along the line
- line up and place this mask on the paper.
Preparing to Paint
What you will need before you start painting
- A container full of water
- A paintbrush
- Some watercolour paints
- A suitable space to paint
- Your masked off image
Personally, when I paint, I put some old newspaper on the surface to keep the surface clean.
How to Splatter Paint
How to splatter paint with watercolour paints:
- dip the paintbrush in water
- apply watercolour paint to paintbrush (rub wet paintbrush on watercolour block)
- gently tap the paintbrush on a rigid finger over the paper, this will cause splattering.
- repeat
- rinse paintbrush before changing colours
once you are satisfied with your result, leave to dry for a few minutes.
Remove Masking Tape
Once the paint is dry (if you are unsure carefully test), gently peel off the masking tape. Next you can do the finishing touches
Add the Finishing Touches
To complete the finishing touches, go over the top of your pencil lines in pen and add any fine details.
Congratulations you have finished your piece of art!
Applying to the Card
If you wish to make this a card to someone, then trim off the excess paper and use glue to stick the paper to the card using a glue suitable for the two materials.
leave glue to dry, if you desire then place a large heavy object such as a book on top to make sure it is flat.
