Watermelon BBQ

BBQ's are pretty expensive, big and heavy. But you can solve this problem by making small BBQ out of watermelon shell which you can throw away after using it. No waste of money, place and nerves. And yet, it will be a new experience if you will try this cooking method.

So, let's start!

Supplies

For this project you need:

  • Watermelon
  • Charcoal
  • Wood chips(I use alder but you can use other type of wood like oak, maple, mosquite and others)
  • Water
  • Kitchen tools(spoon, fork, knife, etc.)
  • Food that you will bake on BBQ(sausages, chicken wings, drumstics, vegetables and etc.)
  • Bamboo sticks

Prepare Wood Chips(optional)

At first you need to have wood chips next to you. You can buy these things in grill shop or make it yourself from firewood with axe like I did. When you have chips - soak it into water. You can use not soaked chips(this will increase risk of wood ignition) or not to use it at all. Personally I recommend to do it because these chips will add extra smoke flavour to your dish.

Cut watermelon in half, scoop red part with spon or whatever you want and make few holes in cover for small air circulation.

Fun fact: watermelon is berry. Don't believe me? Just Google it :)

Heat and Smoke Elements

At this step you need to put a little bit of soaked wood chips and pour hot charcoal on it. You can use chimney lighter to ignite charcoal.

If you are doing food that cooks longer - try to keep the distance between the food and charcoal about inch long or more to prevent instant burnt edges.

Now you need to pierce the food on bamboo sticks(in my case - sausages), cover it and wait until it was cooked. In this time you need to check and flip meat few times until it's cooked to prevent burnt edges.

If you are cooking sausages - I personally recomend slightly cut into it. This trick will make cooking done faster and better.

Done!
