Whoo's Ready for Winter?
Okay! so, I have been wanting to make a hat for a while now (I love hats!) but, I wanted something cool, and cute! and apparently the "it" thing right now is Owls! So, I sat myself down and fashioned my very own children's owl hat! I love all things colorful and bright-eyed, so, the owl is so!
Now, I have as much trouble writing patterns as I do reading them. So bear with me here! if you have any questions, let me know!
Basically, the owl is made with 7 colors of yarn. (unless you do the body with different colors and/or a solid color.) I used a size 5 crochet hook, and a SUPER SIMPLE method that works for making the hat body and the eyes. and I used the same method to make the earflaps and the beak (nose)
most of the stitches are dc (double crochet) except for the earflaps which are sc (single crochet).
I took lots of pictures of the process of this hat, with both intentions of helping and entering the Fiber Arts contest!
like i said, i will be more than happy to help you re-create this wonderful hat!
with your 5mm hook, make a slipknot with your first color.
Getting Started:
ch 4, sl st into first ch.
you should have a tiny little circle and there should be one loop on your hook.
Row 1:
chain 3. then put 11 dc in the center of the circle. (your 3 chs counts as one dc, so altogether you should have 12 dc.)
sl st into 3rd chain of the chain 3.
Row 2:
ch 3 again. (still counts as dc)
dc in the SAME hole as the three chains. you should now have 2 dc in the hole (counting the chain 3)
2 dc in each stitch after that all the way around.
sl st in the 3rd chain of the ch 3 of the previous row
Row 3:
ch 3. dc in the same hole as the ch. 3 (2 dc)
PUT ONE DC IN THE NEXT STITCH
and then 2 dc in the next
then 1 dc in the next stitch
2 in the next stitch..... continue this pattern all the way around.
sl st into the 3rd chain of the ch 3 of the previous round
Row 4:
ch. 3
dc in the same hole
ONE DC IN EACH OF THE NEXT 2 STITCHES
then two dc in the next
one dc in each of the next two
two dc in the next
all the way around
sl st into ch 3 of previous round
Row 5:
ch.3
dc in the same hole
ONE DC IN EACH OF THE NEXT 3 STITCHES
two in the next stitch
one in each of the next 3
two in the next
continue this all the way around
sl st into 3rd ch of ch 3 of previous round
have you picked up the pattern? now heres the trick to sizing. YOU CONTINUE THIS PATTERN UNTIL THE CIRCLE IS THE SAME SIZE AS THE CROWN OF THE PERSONS HEAD YOURE MAKING IT FOR.
once it reaches the right size, you start putting 1 dc in each stitch all the way around. the hat will begin to curl and fold down, giving it the hat shape.
keep making rows of 1 dc in each st until the hat ALMOST reaches the ears. (the earflaps will cover them when you put them on.)
Once you get the hat to the correct length, tie off the yarn, and weave in all ends.
Earflaps:
starting at the back seam of the hat (where the ch 3's are) count out the same number of stitches to the left and right. (I used 10, for smaller hats, count less, for bigger hats, count more). stop counting out on each side when you are almost halfway around the hat. MAKE SURE YOU COUNT OUT THE SAME NUMBER OF STITCHES ON EACH SIDE OR THE EARFLAPS WILL BE IN DIFFERENT SPOTS.
tie a ribbon around the stitches where you stopped on each side or use a stitch marker.
starting on either the left or the right side, and using your choice of yarn and a 5mm hook, sl st into the marked stitch. sc in that stitch and in the next 12-20 stitches (the number of stitches used depends on the size of the hat and how big the earflaps need to be). END ON AN EVEN AMOUNT OF STITCHES)
when you finish this side and the earflap seems to be placed correctly,{ turn, ch 1 and sc into each of those stitches} x2
you should now have 3 rows done on the first earflap.
when you finish the third row, turn, ch 1 and do a decreasing stitch in the next 4 sc. sc in each of the following stitches until the last 4 stitches remain, do two more decreasing stitches.
turn, sc into each stitch across.
repeat this pattern, 1 row of singles, 1 row of decreasing until the earflap finishes at a point. tie off.
repeat same process for other earflap.
nose:
same process as earflaps, slipknot, chain however many you need. (the chain is the wide part of the nose, so it really depends on how big you want the nose to be.)
once you reach the right number of chains, sc into 2nd ch from hook and in each stitch across. DO NOT MAKE 3 ROWS LIKE THIS.
go straight into the pattern. 1 row of singles, 1 row of decreases. until the nose comes to a point, tie off
Eyes:
the eyes are the EXACT pattern of the hat body beginning. start with whatever color you want his eyes to be.
slipknot, ch 4
row one:
sl st into first chain, ch 3 add 11 more dc's (refer to hat body if confusing)
Row two:
sl st into 3rd chain of ch 3 of previous row, ch 3
dc in same stitch as ch 3
two dc in each stitch around
Row three: (DONE IN WHITE)
sl st into top of ch 3 of previous round
ch 3, one dc in same hole as ch 3
{dc in next stitch, and two dc's in stitch after that} finish round this way.
tie off.
pupil: done in black
slipknot, ch 4
row one:
sl st into first chain, ch 3 add 11 more dc's (refer to hat body if confusing)
tie off, sew onto middle of eye.
eyebrows, (optional)
sl st into any stitch on white part of eye, do 1hdc in each stitch halfway around the eye, tie off.
Braids:
cut pieces of string all the same length in various colors (I like using the same colors of the hat)
gather up all of the string for one braid, attach it to the end of the earflap, by sewing or tying it through the earflap (what i did) and braid it!
repeat on other side
ears:
cut small pieces of string (same colors as hat)
gather up all the pieces of string for one ear, and tie it to the hat, fluff it up for extra cuteness!
do the same for the other ear. MAKE SURE YOU PLACE THEM THE SAME DISTANCE APART. i just counted 3 rows from the center of the hat and tied it there.
attach eyes and nose to the face as you see fit! youre done! just cut off all loose ends and tidy it up!
note, looking back i wish i had used buttons for the eyes instead of making them, would have been cuter!
I know its a terribly written pattern, but there it is!
