The problem was to hold a light-weight propane torch for hands-free use.  The solution was just to bend up some heavy gauge galvanized wire to hold the torch, and to hold the wire in a vise.

Analyze the Torch's Shape

Torches from different manufacturers will undoubtedly have different shapes.  You want to keep the torch from sliding up or down in the cradle, and to keep it from twisting.  I wanted my torch aiming up, but you may want it in another position.

Look for parallel flat sides on the torch that can be used to prevent twisting, or other irregularities the torch may have to lock onto.

Here are some pictures of the bare wire, without the torch, and the pliers I used for bending the wire.
