Wood Replacement for Glass Patio Table

The glass top on this patio table has broken a number of times. I replaced it with a wood top because it was cheaper and more durable.

Materials: Seven 1 x 6 x 6 cedar boards, four 2 x 2 x 40" pressure treated, 2" deck screws, eight 1 1/4" deck screws.

Cut the 2 x 2's the width of your table. Dato off the edge if your the rim of your table is U shaped. Fit the pieces inside the rim. Drill a hole through the rim where the cross pieces intersect and screw the rim to the cross pieces with 1 1/4" screws.

Cut the 1 x 6's in half lengthwise. Cut them approximately to length, leaving some extra to make a straight cut later. I made them two inches longer than the length of the table. Chose one piece and drill a 1 1/2" hole in the direct center of the board for the umbrella.

Using the 2" deck screws, fix both edge pieces onto the cross pieces so they hang over the edge about 1/2 inch. Flip the table over and place the rest of the slats, evenly spaced between the two edge pieces. Flush up the ends with a straight board. Screw them onto the cross pieces.

Using a straight edge, draw a line along each end and cut it straight. Using a coffee can, draw a curve on each corner and cut it off. Sand all surfaces and stain, if you'd like.
