Wooden Drink Mat Coasters (Scrap Wood)
In this YouTube video I will be showing you how to make these lovely, stylish drink mats. These were made from a bit of wood lying around the shop. For this project I glued various woods together and then made a border. After that I sanded them all down. I applied a couple of coats of lacquer then applied some wax.
Selecting Your Wood
It is important to select wood which is square and has an interesting grain to it. At 0:14 second on the video you can see the wood that I have selected.
Cutting the Pieces to the Same Size
In the video at 0:23 you can see how I cut the pieces to the correct size using the radial arm saw. Theses blocks are about 2cm.
Glueing the Pieces Together
I then placed the pieces out how I liked them, using multiple clamps and elastic bands I glued them together making sure there were no gaps. This part takes a lot of time and patience. (0:51 second in the video)
Sanding
Next I used my belt sander to clean up the mat coasters.
Finish
I used a couple of coats of spray lacquer and wax for a finish. This makes the coasters grain show out well. I sanded down the coasters between each coat. I then added a felt matt and attached it using PVA glue. (1:26 seconds to see spray lacquer)(1:54 seconds for wax)(2:06 seconds to see the PVA)
