XBOX Custom Picture Jewel

How to put any picture you like under the jewel on your XBOX.

Warning: This mod is a lot of work and you could break your XBOX jewel. Continue at your own risk.

What you will need:
about 3 of hours free time.
A T20 TORX driver.
A flat head screwdriver
A heat Gun
A role of masking tape
some spray paint
1 bottle of polish - Metal, glass, or plastic.
1 cheap vinyl sticker. (can get from a grocery vending machine.)
A tube of silicone adhesive.
A PC connected to a printer.
And your XBOX.

Open the XBOX.

This is easy enough.
Just remove the six Torx bolts for the bottom of the XBOX using a #T20 Torx driver.
Flip the XBOX upright and lift the top off.

Remove the Metal Liner From the Top.

Use a flat head screwdriver to bend back the retaining clips that secure the metal liner to the plastic top.

Lift the liner out of the plastic shell.

Remove the Jewel From the XBOX.

IMGP3919.jpg
This is a delicate operation. Do not pry on the jewel when you do this. The Jewel will crack if you pry on it.

Hold the plastic shell of the XBOX top upside down with your hand on the jewel.

Using your heat gun on low or medium apply heat to the inside of the shell behind the jewel.
Keep heating until the jewel is hot to the touch and/or the plastic shell behind the jewel begins to warp.

Now the adhesive holding the jewel should be soft.
Turn off the heat gun and put it in a safe place.
The adhesive should stay soft long enough to preform the next steps.

Gently insert a butter knife between the Jewel and the shell.
Push the knife in as far as the center of the jewel.
wiggle the knife back and forth a bit but, do not pry up on the jewel.
Insert an other butter knife next to the first one and wiggle it around without prying.
Withdraw the first butter knife and reinsert it on the opposite side of the second knife and wiggle it around.
Continue to work your way around the jewel without prying and in no time the jewel will be free.

Put Your XBOX Back Together.

IMGP3927.jpg
Use a flat head screwdriver to flatten the ears of the retaining clips you pried up earlier.
Press the liner into the plastic shell. Make sure the clips go down onto the posts to secure the liner.
Bolt your XBOX back together.

Make Your Jewel Clean and Clear.

Scrape that black adhesive off the jewel. I used a plastic lens cover for a welding hood with the edges rounded off. You could possibly use a credit card or and old CD for this. Just don't use anything sharp or hard that might scratch into the plastic of the jewel. You don't need to be thorough just get all of it off that you can.

Now the fun part.
Grab your favorite polish, about four rags and rub, a dub, dub. Do it carefully and the chrome XBOX lettering will remain after you have cleared the green paint from your jewel.
This is hard work and takes time. Don't give up. Just commit and git-r-done.

Paint a Picture Window Onto Your Jewel.

The idea here is to paint a border around the edge of the jewel.

First mask the edges of the jewel with masking tape so paint does not get on the edges or the top.

Then, mask off the center of the jewel by cutting a vinyl sticker to fit. (I used a warning sticker I had laying around.)

Use a ruler and make sure your mask is centered and oriented perfectly.

Next paint a coat or two of color. Let it dry completely before trying to remove the masking tape and the sticker.
The edge of the paint looks a bit rough in a couple spots in the picture because I pulled off the sticker before the paint was hard.

Attach Your Picture.

Use a ruler to determine the height and width your picture needs to be.
Then crop, re-size and print your picture. You may need to repeat these steps a few times before you get it just right.

Trim your picture to fit. Be sure to trim enough off your picture that it does not reach the edge of the jewel.

Line up your picture in the window of the jewel and tape it down. I recommend using packing tape but, scotch tape will work as well. Be sure that your picture is completely sealed in with the tape.

Trim away any tape that hangs over the edge of the jewel.

The Crowning Moment.

OK last step, and this is an easy one.

Apply a small amount of silicone sealant to the back of the Jewel and stick it down.

Line it up and use a rag to wipe away any extra silicone.

Don't disturb it for about eight to ten hours.

That is it. Enjoy!
