If you love the movie Zootopia, this little carrot recorder pen held by Judy must look familiar to you. It appears in many scenes and is an important part of the narrative.

It was when me and my girlfriend walking out of cinema that she said, she would definitely buy one if it's sold, and, without thinking, I said "Come on, it's super easy to make one yourself ~ " As a result, she ordered this for the Christmas gift :P

Materials and Design

The design is simple: a pen drive recorder fit inside the 3d printed carrot, with its switch manipulated by a slider penetrating the carrot.

You may need:

  1. USB Voice Recorder
I chose this for the simplicity in operation and its reasonable price. Same product on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Btopllc-Recorder-Rechargea..
  2. Ball pen refill
I use a regular ball pen refill with a diameter of 3 mm for this project.
  3. A 3D printer
With the filament of right colors, ideally.
  4. Bastard file / Smooth file / Sandpaper
Grinding and sanding are required for nearly all the pin holes because for regular 3dp they are all too tiny to print the fineness.

The 3D CAD is done with Onshape, a nice cloud-based 3D supporting collaboration and version control. Feel free to fork, edit, export and help improve the project. Or directly download the STL files (undated link) for 3D printing. (Be wary of compatibility problem due to size difference of refill or USB)

The leaves are created by Loft with some arbitrary surfaces.

The pin shape component penetrates the carrot body and can slide back and forth to manipulate the switch of the recorder.

A higher fill density is recommended for the leaves part because leaves tend to be fragile. Try to find the filaments with right colors so that you don't have to worry about painting them.

Sanding

Keep sanding until the USB can fit and the switch can slide smoothly. Take advantage of a bastard file, a smooth file or some sandpaper.

Assembly

  1. Insert the switch into the carrot body and make sure it slides smoothly.
  2. Insert USB ONLY AFTER the switch is inserted and adjusted to the right position.
  3. For the refill, I had to use a drilling machine to achieve a fine hole in the end.

Done!

The recording function works great with the slider, and the final product really looks like a carrot rather then a toy :D
