Citrus Salt

Citrus salt is a great way to add extra flavor to so many things. It's super easy to make and makes a great gift for beginning cooks. :)

Citrus salt is essentially just what it sounds like - sea salt mixed with lemon, lime or orange zest and then dried in an oven. You can blend your citrus salt or keep it chunky - I like mine chunky!

Citrus salt is great on veggies and meat, and a perfect addition to anything that's been grilled. Also a very fancy seasoning to keep on the table!

I really love orange citrus salt with porkchops, lemon citrus salt is great on chicken, and lime citrus salt is amazing in fajitas. You can also use these citrus salts to rim mixed drinks! :D

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp zest
  • 1/2 cup sea salt - flaky sea salt is the best!
  • parchment paper or aluminum foil
You'll also need a sheet pan and an oven preheated to 225 F.

Curious as to how to get the zest off your citrus fruit of choice? Check out my instructable on it. :D

Chop the Zest and Mix With the Salt

Depending on your method, the zest might be a little chunky. I chopped mine up a little more.

Once that's done, mix the zest with 1/2 cup of salt. Make sure it's mixed very well, you don't want any big clumps of zest hanging out - they won't dry like they should.

Dry Out the Mix

Get a sheet pan and cover it with either aluminum foil or parchment paper. (Parchment paper is easier to work with for the pouring, but I didn't have any on hand.)

Spread out the salt and zest mixture in a thin layer and check again for any clumps. :)

Put it in a 225 F oven for an hour - don't open the door to check it, it'll get mad at you.

Check for Doneness and Then Store!

Once the hour is up, take the citrus salt out of the oven and check to see if it's dry to the touch. It you find pieces of zest that aren't dried out (they should crush easily between your fingers) put it back in the oven for ten minutes and check again. :)

If it's done, pour it into you container of choice using the aluminum foil or parchment. Enjoy. :D
