Medium Sized Spiders

IMG_0854.JPG
i help run a haunted trail and we have enlarged our spiderweb area this year, so we needed more spiders. i thought i'd take some step by step photos and share them with you all. enjoy!

Gather What You Need

IMG_0605.JPG
what you need for part one of the spiders are basic items:
2 sizes of ready made styrofoam balls, toothpicks, black pipe cleaners, hot glue gun and glue sticks, scissors and chopsticks. used but not shown: cup hooks, flat black spray paint, dryer lint, black acrylic paint, red acrylic paint (or red jewels/sequins for eyes) white (Elmers) glue.

Head and Body

add a dab of glue onto the end of 1 of the toothpicks.
insert it into the smaller styrofoam ball.
add a dab of hotglue to the other end of the toothpick.
apply the large ball as the spiders body.
press them together firmly until you feel the glue 'take hold'

Legs

using the semi pointed end of the chopstick, poke 4 holes, about an inch deep on one side of the spider for legs.

Legs, Continued

cut the black pipecleaners in half with the scissors. then carefully fill each leg hole with hot glue.
insert one pipecleaner leg into each hole. a little more hot glue will help them set firmly if smeared around the base of the leg.
repeat process on the other side of the spiders body.

So Far So Good!

a little creative bending and there you have them, spiders!

Hanging Hook

i have some cup hooks from a previous project and by pinching them shut, they make perfect spider hangers.
mine are brass colored, so i painted them black.
add bead of hot glue to the threads of the dried, black hook.
simply screw the gluey black hook into the spiders heiney.

Fur

take a puff of dryer lint and put it into a good sized bowl. add white glue black acrylic paint and mash it all together. then simply apply it to the spider. i do half of each spider at a time, it works better that way.
hang them up by their cup hooks, not touching one another, to dry overnight.

Finished Spider

dab some red paint on for eyes and perhaps an hourglass on the tummy and there you have them, finished spiders ready to hang and scare!

AND keep in mind: it would be a simple matter to add a reindeer motor and animate these super lightweight spiders, too!
