Wooden Cube in a Cube

I will show you how to make a wooden cube with a smaller wooden cube inside. It has no point really but it's cool to make.

Materials Needed:
Piece of scrap wood (at least 1.5 inches thick)

Tools Needed:
Table saw
Miter saw
Drill press
Drill press vice (optional, but makes it a lot easier)
Forstner bit

You first need to find a piece of wood at least 1.5 inches thick. With your table saw your wood so it is square on both ends.

Measure the width of the wood, mine was 1.5 inches, and cut it to that length. it doesn't have to be perfect, just keep it within a 16th of an inch. You can use any size wood you want.

You need to find the center of each cube. I'm assuming that if you have the tools to make this you know how to find the center of a square so I won't go into detail on that.

Before you can drill, you need to find the right sized forstner bit. Pick one that best fits the size of your cube. On one side of the cube (it doesn't matter which), drill a about a 16th of an inch down. Turn the cube over in the vice so that the the hole is on the side. Bring the bit down so that it is about a 16th of an inch above where the two diagonal lines meet the circle (see the second picture). Set that as the depth.

Now that you have the depth set, you can drill the holes. Just drill a hole on each side. Go until you hit the depth stop.

Take a small knife and cut each corner of the small cube away from the inside if the large cube. It will come loose when you are done.

Sand the outside of the cube however much you want. For the inside cube, I used a small file to clean of the splinters.

Now you are done. You could stain and or varnish it or keep it as is. Enjoy your cube in a cube!
